FAQ schema questions

What is FAQ schema?+
FAQ schema is a short block of JSON-LD code that lists the questions and answers on a page in a format search engines can read. It uses the FAQPage type from schema.org. Each question is a Question item, and its answer goes inside an acceptedAnswer.
Will FAQ schema get my page a rich result in Google?+
Probably not. Since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. On other sites the markup won't make the question dropdowns appear in search results. It's still worth adding, because it tells search engines and the AI tools that read your page exactly which questions you answer and what you say.
Where do I put the code on my page?+
Paste the whole script tag into the page's HTML. Search engines read JSON-LD in the head or the body, so either spot is fine. On WordPress or another CMS, use a custom HTML block or a header code field.
Do the questions in the markup have to match the page?+
Yes. Every question and answer in the schema should also be on the page where visitors can read it. Google's guidelines say structured data shouldn't describe content that people can't see. Keep the same wording and the same order, and update the code whenever you change the FAQ.
Can my answers include links or line breaks?+
Yes. Google accepts a small set of HTML in answer text, such as links, paragraphs, lists and bold text. Line breaks you type are saved as \n inside the JSON, and quotes are escaped for you, so the code stays valid whatever you paste in.
How do I check that the markup works?+
Use the Schema Markup Validator to confirm the code is valid schema.org markup. Google's Rich Results Test shows how Google reads it. Since most sites no longer get the FAQ rich result, a clean result in the validator is the main thing to look for.
